Ben Carson announced he is is temporarily suspending his primary campaign after learning that members of his team were involved in a serious car crash while in Iowa.
A Carson campaign employee was driving three volunteers when the van hit a patch of ice and flipped on its side and was then struck by another vehicle, the campaign said. Three passengers, including the driver, are currently in a hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. Another passenger is en route to the trauma center at the University of Nebraska medical center in Omaha.
“Dr. Carson has spoken with the family of the volunteer being transported to Omaha, as well as the attending physician. Dr. Carson has cancelled all remaining campaign events today and will be traveling to Omaha this afternoon to be with the family during this difficult time,” the Carson campaign wrote in a statement.
Prior to the accident Carson was campaigning in South Carolina. He asked all supporters and voters to “join him in prayer for the individual and families involved.”
