Upset by comments made by Jerry Falwell Jr. and his wife during a remote CPAC event, some students at Liberty University are organizing and protesting.
The college president and his wife are taking heat for saying their granddaughter will be raised “as a girl.”
“She’s our granddaughter, and we’re raising her as a girl,” Mrs. Falwell said. “We’re not letting her have a choice. God makes the choice of what the babies are going to be and God decided she would be a girl.”
These remarks were made at the campus’ satellite CPAC event alongside Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle.
The Falwells went on to juxtapose how their granddaughter always has a baby doll with her, but how their sons grew up with guns. Trump Jr. is also being criticized for joking about about his childhood around firearms, as he responded “hashtag me too!”
Students took to campus carrying signs supporting transgender rights and waving gay pride flags last week. Approximately 30 students participated on the steps of the Montview Student Union throughout the day. Some of the signs said “LGBTQ Lives Matter” and “Hate is a choice, being transgender is not.”
Protest organizer Addyson Garner called the comments transphobic and said Trump Jr. trivialized the #MeToo movement by making light of such a serious topic.
“We’re out here mainly to start conversations, but to also be supportive,” said Elizabeth Axley, a sophomore demonstrator who is bisexual. “Yes, this is a Christian campus and, yes, Jerry Falwell Jr. has insinuated that he does not care about you but that does not mean that every Liberty student does not care about you — we love you.”
