Macy’s says “It’s over” to Donald Trump but Trump is firing back, saying, “I broke up with you first!”
In the continuing wake of the fallout surrounding Trump’s comments on Mexican immigrants, Macy’s is the latest corporation to say “you’re fired!” to The Donald, citing his remarks on Mexicans as the reason. Trump however is claiming that it was him who severed business ties with Macy’s first.
In a statement released Wednesday and first reported by CNN, Macy’s said:
Trump fired back posting his statement on his Instagram, claiming he was the one to call it quits with the store because of “the pressure being put on them by outside sources.”
Trump, who is currently second among GOP candidates in both Iowa and New Hampshire polls, has been getting his signature phrase turned around all week. Before the Macy’s breakup, NBC Universal announced yesterday that Trump would no longer appear on The Apprentice nor will they air the Miss USA pageant. This announcement less than a week after Univision, the largest Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S., also said they would no longer air the pageant, co-owned by NBC and Trump.
The billionaire mogul and Republican presidential candidate has played it cool and made it clear the NBC decision doesn’t affect him financially, calling his over-a-decade-long deal with Macy’s “a small business in terms of dollar volume” in his Instagram statement.
What’s not a “small dollar volume?” The 500 million dollar suit Trump filed against Univision yesterday for defamation and breach of contract.
Though both sides face no imminent danger of running out of money, it is yet to be seen who will come out on top of this “he said she said” drama…and how many more “you’re fired!” puns we will see.
