Democratic National Committee Chairwoman and Florida Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz offended victims of domestic abuse Wednesday when she used domestic violence analogies to insult Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, but the mainstream media have pretty much ignored it.
During a speech in Milwaukee, Florida, Wednesday, Schultz said, “Scott Walker has given women the back of his hand. I know that is stark. I know that is direct. But that is reality.”
She also likened Walker’s actions on women’s issues to “grabbing [women] by the hair and pulling [them] back.”
Unfortunately, the (Wisconsin) Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s choice of headline exposes the paper’s effort to hide the story. The front page story is titled, “Walker slammed on women’s issues.”
Moreover, MSNBC all but stifled the story Thursday, covering Schultz’s comments only once at 5am in the morning.
Conversely, mainstream media outlets jumped on comments made by former Republican governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee on women’s issues at an Republican National Committee event earlier this year, so much so that reporters actually gravely misinterpreted his statements.
One wonders if media outlets would shield Schultz if she weren’t a Democrat.
At least one individual is calling Schultz out for her offensive comments. RNC Chairman Reince Priebus tweeted Thursday, “Why hasn’t @DWStweets apologized for her ugly comments yet? She owes an apology to victims of domestic abuse.”
(Update: Schultz kinda-sorta walked her remarks back.)
