Bernie Sanders supporters raged against the machine on Saturday, protesting the outcome of the delegate selection process that was overwhelmingly weighted in favor of Hillary Clinton.
The Hill reported that Clinton picked up two more delegates during the controversial selection process, winning a total of 20 to Sanders’ 15. The former First Lady won the state with 53 percent of the vote.
Sanders supporters felt that the establishment did everything it could to suppress their efforts. A total of Sanders’ 58 delegates to the state convention were excluded from the process for failing to register as Democrats by May 1, or their information — birthday, address, etc. — could not be found or identified in time, and they did not respond to requests to provide that information.
Then there was a rules amendment that was passed on a voice vote, despite the fact that the majority of the people in the room yelled to kill the amendment.
The convention was also held on the same weekend that most of the major universities were holding their graduation ceremonies, preventing many young Sanders supporters from attending.
Sanders supporters were infuriated by the process and became so raucous, at one point Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Cali.) tried to gain control of the crowd but was basically booed off the stage.
Sanders supporter Adryenne Ashley recorded most of the aftermath the next morning. Delegates and fans of the Vermont senator protested the convention, claimed the Democrats “stole our votes,” and wrote #NeverHilLIEry in chalk on the sidewalk.
On May 7, I wrote that the feud between Sanders supporters and the Democratic establishment vis-à-vis the Clinton campaign was the most underreported story of 2016. If Democrats think that Sanders supporters will go peacefully into the night, the convention on Saturday showed that they’ll be no sleep until Philadelphia, or maybe November.
