In an interview that will air Tuesday, bombastic Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) suggested that socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) might not like immigrants.
To add insult to injury, the congressman couldn’t even remember Sanders’ name when he began to criticize him, according to The Hill.
“We’ve got the socialist, uh I can’t remember his name. Bernie Sanders. I don’t know if he likes immigrants because he doesn’t seem to talk about immigrants. But sooner or later, he’ll tell us. I hope he likes immigrants. I haven’t heard him say anything. He’s been kind of quiet and silent,” said Gutierrez to Larry King on ORA TV’s PolitiKING.
“So I hope that when he sees this program, he sees that there’s a lot of people waiting to hear from him,” Gutierrez continued.
Hillary Clinton, who Gutierrez has endorsed, has been pandering to Hispanics at campaign stops and promising to take executive actions that judges have ruled against in both federal and appeals courts.
Sanders, on the other hand, has thus far spent his campaign focusing on broad economic issues. On Thursday, he will propose new legislation that guarantees paid vacation time as well as medical and maternity leave for workers as part of a “family values” initiative.
Despite Gutierrez’s accusations of not advocating on behalf of immigrants, Sanders has supported liberal immigration policies in the past. He supported Obama’s executive actions and voted in favor of a comprehensive immigration reform bill in 2013 that included amnesty for illegal immigrants.
