Although most Americans are mourning the deaths of the 12 people killed at a July 20 midnight showing of the Dark Knight Rises in Colorado, a community of young girls in love with accused killer James Holmes has gone online to show their devotion.
Some 58 others were wounded or injured when Holmes allegedly burst into the crowded theater through the emergency exit and sprayed bullets into the crowd, and even more were potentially endangered by the boobytrapped explosives he had rigged in his apartment.
According to Buzzfeed, these girls refer to themselves as “Holmies” and have taken to wearing the plaid and to discussing their devotion to the accused killer on Tumblr.
One girl is shown wearing plaid, saying “Holmies 4 lyf,” while another brags about how she put on plaid to walk to blocks to buy coffee while finishing her post with a similar saying of “Holmies for life.”
While mayseveneleven is shown wearing all plaid in honor of the accused killer.
“People are so quick to judge him when there’s probably a lot more going on then what we know about. No one goes from being fine to this without a reason,” writes jamesholmeslover86, who notes her battle with psychosis, on the “Holmies” Tumblr. “Just because I’m interested in this guy doesn’t make me a bad person[.]”
The Holmies have built an inside joke around the accused killer talking about Slurpees, and the beverage appears as a frequent item in the discussions, photos and videos that they have posted online.
Fan art featuring doodles of Holmes and his orange hair are common in the community. One page even features a doodle of the accused killer surrounded by the words: “Remember Holmies to love and tolerate ‘cause haters inevitably gonna hate!”
Another 17-year-old “Holmie” calling herself “Swallowthefruitsofmypleasure” describes her fascination with Holmes, noting her interest in serial killers and murderers, as well as her struggle with bipolar disorder, saying: “i have been through things that normal seventeen year olds wouldn’t. and i will defend james’ mentality until the truth is out. do not give me the bulls**t about ‘because holmes is white, it’s a mental illness’. mental illness can effect ANY race. it effects everyone, everyday. and not everyone handles it the same.”
Yet others talk about their desire to write to Holmes in prison.
