Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday where the socialist discussed his positions on marijuana, college, and Larry David’s impersonation of him on Saturday Night Live.
When asked about his stance on pot, Sanders smiled to a round of laughs from the audience, but then discussed why he was in favor of legalization.
“We have more people in jail today than any other country on earth,” the senator said. “We have large numbers of lives that have been destroyed because of this war on drugs, because people were caught smoking marijuana and so forth. I think we’ve got to end the war on drugs.”
The only problem with what Sanders is saying is that it isn’t true–almost no one goes to jail just for smoking grass according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Sanders also made the case for free college tuition because after all, that’s what Sweden, Denmark, and Norway would do.
“Here is the simple reality, this is the year 2015, everyone knows that a college degree is more or less the equivalent of what a high school degree was 50 years ago,” Sanders said. “So we have free public education through high school, and I think in a very competitive global economy what we have to say if we want to compete, we’re gonna have to have colleges and universities tuition free in the United States of America.”
That announcement was met with a large round of applause from the audience, much to the same degree as if he would have said ‘free ice cream for everyone.’
Kimmel asked Sanders what he thought of Larry David’s impression of him on SNL, which he said was “pretty, pretty, pretty good!”
