Jimmy Fallon wore a suit and tie for polar plunge with Rahm Emanuel

Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon is committed to getting Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on his show. So much so, that he ran into the freezing cold water of Lake Michigan wearing a full suit and tie.

The Associated Press reports the two participated in the “Polar Plunge” on Sunday, after Emanuel called the comedian and goaded him to partake in the event. In the annual fundraiser, people jump into the icy waters of the lake to benefit the Special Olympics Chicago. And the chill apparently sent a soaking wet Fallon screaming back toward shore. The host was even complaining of the cold before hoping in the lake.

The deal was that if Fallon took the polar plunge, then Emanuel would appear on The Tonight Show. Twitter users also egged Fallon on by making the #JimmyPlungeWithUs campaign into a trending topic.

Participants and onlookers often appear in costumes at the plunge, and this year, many people carried signs featuring Fallon’s head, according to the AP.

Emanuel’s reason taking the icy plunge wasn’t to prove he was tougher than Fallon, however. He made a deal with the kids of Chicago that if they read 2 million books, as part of a Chicago Public Library program called “Rahm’s Readers,” he’d jump into the freezing lake.

After the original back-and-forth between Fallon and Emanuel on Twitter, it was only fitting that the Mayor tweeted out pics of the duo warming up after Sunday’s plunge.
