One Kentucky middle school got a little more patriotic this week, after the administrators changed the dress code to allow pro-America t-shirts.
The change comes after Mahaffey Middle School student Cejai Taylor was sent to the office for wearing a red “Support Our Troops” shirt to class. The middle school, located on Fort Campbell Army base, prohibited non-collared graphic t-shirts, even on monthly dress-down days. But Taylor told the Nashville affiliate of Fox News that she was just supporting her dad, Sergeant James Taylor, during his deployment.
“I take it really hard when he has to leave,” Taylor said.
Taylor originally printed flyers asking the school to support “Red Fridays,” but she said administrators barely considered her proposition. Cassandra Taylor picked her daughter up from school after she was notified of the incident.
“I’m not going to make her change,” Taylor’s mom said. “She’s standing her ground and as her mother and as a military wife, I support my child.”
After reviewing the dress code policy, Cindy Gibson, a spokeswoman for the Department of Defense education system, told TheBlaze on Wednesday the school would now allow “patriotic T-shirts” on dress-down days.
After the initial incident, Taylor spoke with her dad, who expressed his support for his daughter.
“He says that he’s very proud of me for standing up for what I believe in,” she said. “And he can’t wait to see me again.”
