John Oliver is showing his true colors, and it’s blue.
On Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight on HBO, Oliver took 18 minutes to describe why Libertarian party candidate Gary Johnson and Green party candidate Jill Stein are horrible third party choices, and that Americans shouldn’t waste their votes on them.
Oliver opens up his segment by citing the 2000 election where Al Gore lost Florida to George W. Bush by 537 votes because Ralph Nader got nearly 100,000 votes.
The segment has its moments: Oliver rips on Jill Stein’s music career where she made supremely awful songs with lyrics that made zero sense; he also made fun of Gary Johnson’s excursion in which he climbed Mount Everest. Johnson compared conquering Everest to an anthropomorphized mountain “lifting up her skirt” and getting a peek.
Oliver isn’t completely out of line in his criticisms of Stein and Johnson though. He slammed Stein for pandering to anti-vaxxers and 9/11 conspiracy theorists, as well as her outlandish plan to “bail out” college students and graduates from debt through a government stimulus.
When he turned his attention to Johnson, Oliver hammered his plan to make government smaller by eliminating the Departments of Education, Commerce, and Housing & Urban Development, but failed to show why they should be gutted. He also dished on Johnson’s unrealistic plan to eliminate federal income tax and replace it with a consumption tax.
It’s perfectly fine for Oliver to rip on whoever he wants, but his criticisms of Clinton have been limited. Although, he deserves a little credit for even bringing them to light on his show.
With that being said, Oliver has dedicated full episodes to tearing down Donald Trump, Gary Johnson, and Jill Stein, and not once has he done that for Clinton.
There are still a few more weeks in the election, so I’m still holding out hope. But don’t hold your breath.
