Prominent liberals have decided that Elon Musk is too right-wing to own Twitter.
What this should tell you is that broadly, on the Left, power politics and culture wars matter more than the things many liberals claim matter most to them.
You have probably heard that the planet is melting and that no issue in our lifetime is as important as battling climate change. Is any individual alive today more responsible for reducing greenhouse gas emissions than Musk? (I mean, anyone not involved in fracking?)
Also, Musk was a maxed-out donor to former President Barack Obama in 2008.
Yet Musk is now being recoded as a right-wing bad guy. Why? Because he believes in free speech, and the Left does not. Musk is a bad guy because he would not throttle access to negative press about the Democratic nominee days before an election. He is also a bad guy because he would not strictly enforce the Pink Police State’s weird, fringy rules of gender ideology.
Musk lobbied like crazy for green-energy subsidies and gave six-figure donations to Obama. He supported Obama’s stimulus. But the above offenses carry infinitely more weight than anything Musk has done for other liberal causes.
This is because the Left’s top priority is waging an aggressive culture war. The most important issue to today’s liberals, on aggregate, is censorship — to have power over what others say in public.
