Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo slammed “wokeness” in the military Wednesday, as the Air Force Academy recently came under fire for telling cadets to avoid using gendered terms.
Pompeo said military training “must never be corrupted to serve political ends” and that doing so will put the country at risk in an opinion piece for Fox News.
“Under the Biden administration, warfighting doctrines are being replaced — even at the training level — with doctrines of diversity, equity and inclusion,” Pompeo said.

Pompeo — who attended West Point, served as a cavalry officer in West Germany, and served with the 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry in the U.S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division — cautioned against efforts at the Air Force Academy to remove gendered terms and a fellowship program that promotes excluding men.
Training materials from the Air Force Academy are reportedly telling cadets to “include all genders” and avoid using terms such as “mom and dad” and “boyfriend or girlfriend.”
The Brooke Owens Fellowship program has received criticism for leaning into identity politics. The application for the program states, “If you are a cisgender woman, a transgender woman, non-binary, agender, bigender, two-spirit, demigender, genderfluid, genderqueer, or another form of gender minority, this program is for you. If you are a cisgender man, this program isn’t for you.”
Pompeo has called the actions by the Air Force Academy part of a “repackaged Marxist dogma” and slammed President Joe Biden’s leadership as commander in chief, saying, “A woke military is a weak military.”

“Marxist dogma was the foundation of the Soviet Union’s tyranny. It was the foundation of the communist lie we fought against. Now its false, empty, and broken ideas — ideas that America defeated — are taking root throughout our nation’s military. That’s unacceptable. America’s military needs to wake up — champion excellence and throw out wokeness,” Pompeo said in his opinion piece.
The military is facing difficulties in reaching recruitment goals for the year, with standards being lowered and incentive programs being launched to combat the weak numbers.
