Kirk Cameron touts ‘homeschool awakening’ and blasts public school ‘grooming’

Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron is creating a documentary offering an alternative to public education, saying the system is more focused on turning students into leftist activists than educating them.

“There are good teachers who are trying to be a light in a dark system,” Cameron said. “Public education has gotten so bad, it’s doing more grooming for leftist politics than it is education.”

Having been raised by a father who was a public school teacher, Cameron said he “had a healthy skepticism free of public school.” His children attended a private school, but when they reached the sixth grade, he and his wife did not feel it was the right choice.

HOME SCHOOLING INCREASES NEARLY 40% IN VIRGINIA, IN PART DUE TO COVID AND CRT CONCERNS

That’s when they decided to try home schooling. Cameron admitted the “stereotypes and misconceptions … exploded.”

“Kids can learn by their learning style [and] get a fantastic education,” Cameron said, calling home schooling their “best decision.”

Research shows that Cameron and his wife are not alone, as many families have opted to home-school their children due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A report shows that the number of home-schooled students increased by 63% during the 2020-21 school year and fell by only 17% in the 2021-22 school year.

Cameron is now working on his documentary, The Homeschool Awakening, which will be released in theaters on June 13 and 14 only.

The film highlights 20 families from across the country and how “the world has become their classroom.”

“The big idea is that if you believe God gave your children to you, then you have the opportunity to shape their hearts and minds,” Cameron said.

He added that he created the film with the hope of helping parents see they do “have the opportunity to tailor [their] kid’s education and what to instill, the knowledge, etc.”
