Ex-Redskin Brian Mitchell never backed down on the football field. And current Redskin Clinton Portis isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Those traits made for explosive radio Tuesday, when the two verbally sparred on the John Thompson Show.
It started from the beginning of his 23-minute appearance when Portis, a weekly guest on ESPN 980, told Thompson, “We got some haters and there’s one on this show. He’s so caught up into whatever I do and being negative about it … .”

To which Mitchell, a co-host, replied, “I’m not hating. I respect you, but a lot of things I don’t like and if I don’t like it, I will tell you.”
Mitchell later told him, “Every time I say something negative, I say something positive. But I’m not going to be one of those people running around kissing your butt.”
A few minutes later, Portis said, “You see me all the time, why don’t you talk to me, talk to me like a man?”
Mitchell said, “Don’t think you can come on this air and talk trash to me like I’ll back down. I talk about football, bro. If you ever want to go to that area, that will be the wrong thing to do.”
Mitchell later asked why Portis didn’t say something to him in person when the two saw each other after the Giants’ game.
“The way I felt at the time, if I was to try to talk to you man, me and you probably would have been in a little scuffle,” Portis said, “so instead of going through that I kept it smooth.”
