Blackmon out at Churchill after first season, despite improvement

In his rookie season, Reggie Blackmon guided Churchill’s girls basketball team to a 12-12 record, an improvement on the 9-15 mark the previous season. Butthe Bulldogs will not retain Blackmon next season, he confirmed Monday.

Blackmon, 33, who works as a trainer in a retirement facility, refused comment on his departure and said he plans to pursue other high school coaching opportunities.

After a frustrating 4-8 start last year, in which seven of the losses came by seven or fewer points, Churchill showed improvement, winning eight of its final 12 games and avenging previous losses to Walter Johnson and Magruder.

Blackmon served as the Bulldogs’ junior varsity coach for two seasons and was promoted to the varsity when coach Pat Fisher took over as the school’s athletic director. Fisher led Churchill to the school’s lone girls state championships in 2002 and 2003.
