Junior QB Miller stars in scrimmage

Navy starting linebacker Matt Brewer has been grounded for of an undisclosed disciplinary matter. The rising senior was on the sideline for Saturday’s scrimmage, but not in pads. Coach Ken Niumatalolo said that Brewer violated a “team rule” and that he would “probably” miss the rest of the spring. Brewer entered spring practice listed as co-starter at inside linebacker with senior Brye French, but was removed from the depth chart this week.

In the scrimmage at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the offense showed vast improvement from the turnover-filled scrimmage last Saturday. Junior quarterback Trey Miller had a stellar day, completing 16 of 19 passes for 190 yards. He also had several long runs, but most came on improvised scrambles on passing plays. Miller’s final pass might have been his most impressive, a 25-yard touchdown strike to 6-foot-4 WR Brandon Turner (four receptions, 53 yards) to complete a two-minute drill.

Also productive in the passing game were WR Matt Aiken (2 receptions, 35 yards), SB John Howell, who caught a pass for 25 yards, and RB Prentice Christian (3 receptions, 25 yards), who also had a 35-yard run.

Senior slot backs Bo Snelson (4 carries, 58 yards) and Gee Gee Greene (4 carries, 24 yards, touchdown) ran effectively outside.

No. 2 quarterback John Hendrick, wearing a protective green jersey, ran well before aggravating his turf toe injury. His passing however was spotty for a second straight week.

“The guy’s had a really good spring,” Niumatalolo said. “The kid’s been hurt. We finally gave him a green jersey because he earned it.”

On defense, OLB Jordan Drake had two sacks and OLB Josh Tate had one on the opening play along with three tackles for a loss. French continued his strong spring with a sack and a pass knock-down. Sophomore safety George Jamison, who is not listed on the depth chart, opened eyes with consecutive strong plays, one in coverage, the other a TFL.
