Talked to Santino Quaranta after D.C. United training this morning for the first time since the staph infection that has sidelined him for the last two weeks.
“It was a mess,” said Quaranta. “Three surgeries and eight days later. They went in three times. The last time was two days ago, one last time to close it.”
Quaranta says he has no idea how the whole thing happened, that he thought it was just an ingrown hair on his upper right leg.
“I wasn’t scared in the beginning,” he said. “It was just a nuisance. I wanted to get it overwith and get out of the hospital and get to Dallas. Then they started telling me – I could tell by their language that something wasn’t right. That’s when I started getting more nervous because it wasn’t responding to a whole lot of stuff, the antibiotics and when they were cutting it open.”
He still has about a 3×3 bandage over the wound, which remains stitched up for now, but Quaranta is targeting a return in time for the AC Milan match next week.
“I feel a lot better,” he said. “It took a lot out of me after that week and all the antibiotics. I’m a little tired from all that stuff, but I should be back by Wednesday.”
