The defending World Team Tennis champion Washington Kastles picked up where they left off last season with a 22-18 victory Monday night at the Orange County Breakers in their 2012 opener.

The Kastles, who made WTT history last year by winning all 16 of their matches, put their 17-match streak on the line Wednesday at the Springfield Lasers. The Kastles home opener comes Thursday night against the Martina Hingis and Boston Lobsters.

Two-time league MVP Leander Paes led Washington in its opener, teaming with Anastasia Rodionova for a 5-1 victory in mixed doubles and Bobby Reynolds for a 5-3 win in men’s doubles. Reynolds then clinched the match with a 5-4 victory over John-Patrick Smith in men’s singles.

Paes excelled despite a grueling schedule. He had played each of the previous seven days at Wimbledon, competing in men’s and mixed doubles. On Sunday, Paes of India and Elena Vesnina of Russia were beaten in the Wimbledon mixed doubles final by Americans Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
