Two transactions this week could pave the way for a couple of new additions to United’s roster before its next match.
United traded the rights to former players Dema Kovalenko and Shawn Kuykendall to Red Bull New York on Thursday for a partial allocation. This follows the trade of forward Santino Quaranta to Los Angeles on Tuesday, for which United also received a partial allocation and a draft pick.
“We may be able to be in the position to pull off a player signing or two by Monday,” said United technical director Dave Kasper, who said the players would be from South America. The international transfer window closes on Aug. 15.
Neither Kovalenko nor Kuykendall have been on United’s roster this season.
Kovalenko, who spent three years in D.C., signed a one-year contract with FC Metalurh Zaporizhya in his native Ukraine, but he has been training this week with New York.
Kuykendall (Madison High) was waived in February after playing just 10 minutes as a rookie.
