It was still a two-possession game for Georgetown on Wednesday, with 1 minute, 14 seconds remaining at Pittsburgh when the Hoyas found themselves in a tricky spot, ahead, 66-60, with the ball out of bounds and one second left on the shot clock.
In a similar situation last year, it would’ve been a guaranteed turnover, and quite possibly the start of a late collapse resulting in a second straight defeat.
But the Hoyas responded with perfect execution on the inbounds play, Austin Freeman feeding a cutting Chris Wright for an easy layup and the nail in the coffin.
“We’re confident,” said Wright, “and I think everybody in the building thought the ball was going to Greg [Monroe].”
Each time the Hoyas (14-3, 5-2 Big East) have lost this season, they’ve come back and played even better than they did prior to the particular loss. Not that head coach John Thompson III minds one bit.
“When you haven’t lost, it’s hell,” said Thompson. “It’s horrible. After every loss you go, you study, and after wins, sometimes they aren’t as focused, they aren’t as attentive as after losses. Our group has been extremely focused after every game. It’s helping so far.”
