Nats blow lead, game

The Nats let one slip away Friday night at Camden Yards, surrendering a six-run lead, and losing 7-6, as second baseman Cristian Guzman threw wide to first base on a double-play grounder, allowing pinch runner Jake Fox to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Nats wasted a spectacular performance by Nyjer Morgan. The slumping center fielder went 4-for-5, scored three runs, and made a pair of brilliant plays that saved at least three runs. Manager Jim Riggleman pulled starter J.D. Martin in the fifth, even though he had yet to yield an unearned run. The bullpen fared well until Tyler Clippard gave up three runs in the eighth that tied it.

Make no mistake. The Nats kicked this one away. Shortstop Ian Desmond made two more errors, both in the O’s three-run fifth inning that triggered the comeback.
