On the surface, libertarian Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul and “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart appear to have little in common. Surprisingly, however, not only did Stewart treat the congressman with kid gloves on the show Monday, but Jesse Benton, a spokesman for Paul’s campaign, said that there was a “mutual respect” between the two.

And, even though “The Daily Show” is filmed in the liberal enclave of Manhattan, nearly 150 supporters greeted Paul when he exited the studio.
