More field goals
Really, what fan doesn’t want that? Nothing is more exciting than a preseason game highlighted by lots of field goals. But one of the last things the Redskins must do is pick a kicker. Thus far, the Redskins have attempted three field goals. That’s hardly a way to find a winner. There doesn’t seem to be much difference between Shaun Suisham and Dave Rayner at this point, though Rayner’s NFL resume is weaker. If they don’t get more opportunities, that could be the difference.

Better running lanes
The Redskins’ first offense failed to create them vs. New England, which had a front seven made to stop the run. It worked. Even though Clinton Portis won’t play, it would be helpful to see right tackle Stephon Heyer, for example, do a better job of getting to the linebackers. And it would be nice to see the tight ends sustaining more blocks than they did a week ago. Often, that makes the difference between a two-yard gain and one for several yards. It adds up.
Improved coverage units
By the young players in particular. That means rookie linebackers Cody Glenn and Robert Henson need to show improvement in this area, though Glenn seems to be getting better. Also, if Marko Mitchell does a decent job as a gunner that would help. But, let’s be honest, he’ll never be used in that spot in a game. The young players can help themselves with good work on special teams.
No injuries
Really, for the first units, this is the most important. Jason Campbell won’t be asked to do much — break a sweat, lead a series then leave the game. And with Albert Haynesworth out, the defense will be different. The best thing for the starting defense would be a three-and-out and to call it a night.
