Just won’t slap it on his wrist

Divorces can get messy, and the Redskins’ one with Donovan McNabb is headed that way — if it isn’t already.

There was the nasty back and forth between McNabb’s agent, Fletcher Smith, and Mike and Kyle Shanahan at Christmas time.

Now more troubles are leaking out: The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan first reported Thursday morning that McNabb refused to wear a wristband with the plays during the season, fearing it would hurt his image, a story that has been confirmed by multiple outlets and Redskins sources.

Smith did not respond to voice and text messages. But the bottom line is that the Redskins weren’t pleased with how McNabb picked up the offense. There were rumblings from multiple NFL sources before the season about this being the case.

In fairness, it was a new system and a complicated one. But it’s also true that one of the things Mike Shanahan loves about John Beck is that he comes to work early and stays late. For those wanting Vince Young, just know that his reputation in this regard is, well, not good. Which is why one NFL source who knows Shanahan well said he would be “shocked” if the Redskins signed Young.

Will this hurt McNabb’s trade value? Teams know he struggled to learn the Redskins’ offense with an entire offseason, so it’s hard to imagine teams will give up too much for a guy who could have a serious learning curve. And once the lockout is over, if the Redskins don’t trade him immediately, then they’ll have to release him. There’s no use continuing this relationship one minute longer than necessary.
