A Major League Baseball team may have made a “Giant” mistake with the merchandise it is selling.
The nickname “San Fran” was seen on a few shirts being sold by the San Francisco Giants at their store, according to SFGate, leading to several locals expressing their displeasure.
“Who approved this?!?” a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle wrote on social media. “This should not be in the Dugout Store. Would be like walking in the Hogwarts store from ‘Harry Potter’ and finding a T-shirt that says ‘Voldemort.'”

Did a double take when I saw someone wearing a “San Fran” Giants shirt and assumed it was unlicensed and likely from a different state. Apparently, I assumed wrong. WHO OK’D THIS T-SHIRT?! ??♀️??♀️ https://t.co/CpFNJJO3HP

My dad is turning over in his grave. He grew up in #SanFrancisco. NOT “San Fran” and NOT “Frisco.” https://t.co/YgvHuTlxGm

Despite the vitriol, at least one piece of merchandise with the phrase emblazoned on the front has proved popular. A black T-shirt with the words “San Fran” on it is currently out of stock, according to the Giants’ online store.

A poll conducted among people across the United States found that two-thirds of those surveyed said they would stop calling San Francisco “San Fran” if they found out the term was hated by the city’s locals. However, about 20% of San Francisco locals in the survey stated that they are still using the term “San Fran,” according to the survey by Propeller Insights and the PR firm Bospar.
