From preseason darling to NIT favorite?

At the start of the season these teams weren’t just considered locks to make the NCAA tournament, they were pegged as teams that could make a deep run. Now? They’re in trouble.

Baylor » Short of a run to the Big 12 final, one of last year’s tournament darlings — and preseason No. 14 ranking — will be headed to the NIT. Baylor has defeated one team with a top-50 RPI rating.

Michigan State » A consensus top-five preseason pick, the 17-13 Spartans need another win or two. The Spartans have made the NCAA tournament 13 straight years (third longest in the country) and returned the bulk of a team that reached the Final Four.

Memphis » If the Tigers don’t win the Conference USA tournament, they’re in trouble. The preseason No. 19 pick by The Associated Press has an RPI of 38 and nine wins over teams in the top 100. But they’ve lost three of four and play in a lackluster conference.
