University of the District of Columbia selects interim president

Left without a president after Allen Sessoms was fired without cause at the end of last year, the University of the District of Columbia has named an interim appointment.

James Earl Lyons Sr., former president of Bowie State University in Maryland, will take the helm on March 20 as interim president.

Lyons served as the secretary of the Maryland Higher Education Commission from 2007 to 2010, and he has also led Jackson State University in Mississippi and California State University-Dominguez Hills.

"Dr. Lyons brings an impressive academic history having served as president of three universities over the past three decades," said Elaine Crider, chair of the UDC's Board of Trustees.

UDC has announced reductions to faculty and staff, facing demands that the university combat ballooning costs.
