One of the greatest fighters in mixed martial arts history was arrested for drunk driving and firing a gun from his car.
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones was picked up by Albuquerque, New Mexico, police at 1 a.m. MST on Thursday morning after a criminal complaint was filed concerning gunshots in the area. Jones denied any knowledge of the shots, but police found a black handgun underneath his seat. Jones failed a breathalyzer after authorities found a half-empty, 750-milliliter bottle of Recuerdo behind the passenger seat.
“As part of the investigation into this incident, our Gun Violence Reduction Unit will test the firearm and bullet casing to determine whether the gun has been used in any crimes,” the Albuquerque Police Department’s director of communications, Gilbert Gallegos, said in a statement. “Reducing gun violence in Albuquerque is our top priority.”
Jones was charged with negligent use of a firearm, aggravated DWI, no proof of insurance, and possession of an open container. His arrest marks the latest in a string of high-profile charges against the fighting champion, including a conviction for felony hit-and-run in 2015.
