President Trump recommended former Vice President Joe Biden choose Sen. Elizabeth Warren as his running mate, arguing that she’s most responsible for him being the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
Trump argued Monday that Warren’s refusal to suspend her campaign before Super Tuesday split the liberal vote between herself and Sen. Bernie Sanders early in the primary, thus allowing Biden to emerge victorious.
“I think Elizabeth Warren is responsible for Joe Biden’s win because she didn’t drop out, and Bernie would have won every single state on Super Tuesday,” the president told the New York Post. “I think he should pick Elizabeth Warren because Elizabeth Warren, more than any other person, including [South Carolina Rep.] Jim Clyburn and including anybody you can name, is responsible for the win of Joe Biden,” the president said, referencing Clyburn’s endorsement of Biden in the lead up to the South Carolina primary.
The president also questioned whether Biden would even “make it” to the election.
“If he’s gonna win — and I don’t know that he makes it to the starting gate — but if he does make it to the starting gate, [Warren is] responsible,” he argued.
Biden has promised to pick a female running mate and recently acknowledged that “more than one black woman” was being considered for his ticket. One of the more public options is Georgia’s 2018 failed gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams, who has been promoting herself for the position.
“If you look at Stacey Abrams, I was the one that went to Georgia and fought Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama,” Trump said, referring to many of the high profile endorsements Abrams received. “[Gov. Brian] Kemp wasn’t given a chance. Kemp wasn’t given a chance to win and he won.”
