A top adviser to former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg fueled speculation about a mayoral bid by Andrew Yang in the Big Apple.
Howard Wolfson, who was deputy mayor under Bloomberg and is now an adviser for his 2020 presidential campaign, said Yang “would make a very interesting candidate” for New York City mayor next year.
The tech entrepreneur, who had no previous political experience, ended his long-shot presidential bid late Tuesday after poor showings in Iowa and New Hampshire. His campaign lasted longer than those of some members of Congress and governors.
A Democratic consultant told the New York Post a mayoral bid in the city would be “a natural next step” for Yang.
“With the notoriety and following he’s gathered, he has to be taken seriously,” the person said.
The field to replace Mayor Bill de Blasio, who ended his own bid for the White House months ago, includes Comptroller Scott Stringer, Council Speaker Corey Johnson, and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
