House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy warned the media not to trust a news report that suggests President Trump made a troubling promise to a unnamed foreign leader in a call leaked by a whistleblower.
“I know the media always wants to rush when they think something is sensational,” California Rep. McCarthy said. “I think nine times out of ten we find a lot of that is not true.”
The Washington Post reported the whistleblower complaint, citing two former U.S. officials. The House Intelligence Committee, led by California Rep. Adam Schiff, is investigating the matter, which was referred to the inspector general of the intelligence community.
The whistleblower reportedly overheard Trump make a “promise” to a foreign leader.
McCarthy told reporters, “This is not something I have seen the president doing,” and warned that major media outlets have gotten stories wrong recently.
He pointed to the New York Times, which issued an update to a story that initially claimed to have proof of sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh dating back more than three decades.
“Instead of jumping to conclusions, I’d get the facts first,” McCarthy said.
