South Carolina, or South Cackalacky, is the birthplace of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, heavyweight champion boxer Joe Frazier, and this country’s seventh president, Andrew Jackson.
For Joe Biden, South Carolina could be the birthplace of his comeback for his struggling presidential campaign.
While New Hampshire is not a fully open primary in the sense that registered Republicans can’t vote for Democrats, South Carolina is a different story in that registered voters of any party can participate.
What will that mean?
Well, we’ll see how this plays out for Biden, who has had a commanding lead in South Carolina polls ever since he announced he was running for president. He’s relying heavily on the state’s coveted African American voter bloc and got a key endorsement from South Carolina congressman Jim Clyburn. However, if enough registered Republicans vote in the Democratic primary for the candidate they want President Trump to face in the general election, you could see Bernie Sanders grab a shock victory, especially after winning the Nevada caucuses in a landslide.
Of course, the assumption is that Sanders would get crushed by Trump in a head-to-head matchup. Yet, I’d be quick to point out that the open secret in 2016 was that Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party wanted to face Trump in the general election. Well, we know how that turned out.
