New York GOP congressman says campaign headquarters vandalized

Election headquarters belonging to the campaign of New York Republican Rep. Tom Reed was vandalized, the congressman announced on social media Wednesday morning.

According to Reed, a perpetrator hurled a brick through his Corning, New York, campaign office, “causing extensive damage.”

Reed added on Twitter, “Thank God no one was hurt but this renews our commitment to stand up to this hatred and extremism. I will continue to try to unite us as violence is never acceptable!”

The vandalism comes amid a wave of political unrest across the country in various municipalities.

The New York Republican, who represents the state’s 23rd District, is running for his fifth term against the same Democratic opponent he faced last election cycle, Tracy Mitrano, a cybersecurity expert.

Reed defeated Mitrano by 9 points two years ago in the conservative district, where Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than 20,000 registered voters. Following her defeat, she continued to criticize Reed’s stances and voting record in Washington.
