Buttigieg blames debate forehead smudge on possible ‘smushed’ gnat

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg blames his debate forehead smudge on possible ‘smushed’ gnat.

The South Bend, Indiana mayor said the dark smudge that appeared on his forehead during Tuesday’s Democratic primary debate may have been the remains of a small bug he smashed.

Speaking on CNN Wednesday morning, the 37-year-old was asked about the splotch that was nearly an inch above his right eyebrow during the debate and said he wasn’t sure what exactly it was. However, he noted that there were some gnats on the stage and conceded that he may have inadvertently crushed one.

“Our best guess is that — there were these little kind of gnats around,” Buttigieg explained, “and maybe I smushed one, and it got on my forehead.

“I don’t know. I didn’t know about it until after. That’s the thing about having something on your forehead, but hopefully it didn’t distract from the message about what’s at stake in this election,” he added.

The hosts of the show joked about the splatter, and Buttigieg claimed crushing the gnat showed that he “can do many things at once in this election.”

The second Democratic debate of the week is scheduled for Wednesday. Democratic front-runner Joe Biden will face off against nine other candidates.
