There’s no point in Trump waiting until Jan. 20 to leave office

There are just under two weeks left before President Trump leaves office. At this point, it would be best for him to head out sooner rather than later.

There’s nothing left for him to do now that his con over having the election stolen has finally been exhausted, and Congress has certified Joe Biden as the next president.

But since we’re constitutionally forbidden from swearing Biden in right now, Trump could go ahead and resign, ask that Vice President Mike Pence take his place and give him a preemptive pardon, and then fly off to Florida, where he can rage tweet and watch Fox News to his heart’s content.

I’m not nearly as upset by Wednesday’s storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters as cable news anchors are. I’m every bit as concerned about that as they were about the months of violent rioting, looting, arson, and vandalism that occurred in 2020.

Like most people, I’m turned off by mobs of any kind. They’re too emotional and too often end up with someone dead. In the case of Wednesday’s riot, four died. We don’t need another episode like that, which was absolutely instigated by the president.

Trump will only serve one term in office, and despite the near-constant churn of chaos of those four years, almost all of which was manufactured by the media, it was a success. The last six weeks, though, are nothing for him to be proud of, and his supporters should feel disrespected and embarrassed by him.

Yes, there was fraud in the 2020 election, and yes, ballots that should have never been counted, in fact, were. But Trump has taken his supporters on a ride in convincing them, emphasis on “con,” that there was any shot at all to change the results. His legal team had several chances to make its case, and it failed each time.

Trump doesn’t have to leave office early, and another impeachment would only be salt in the open wound caused by Wednesday’s incident. But there’s no point in him staying.
