14 people dead after bus explosion in Syria

A bus explosion in Syria’s capital city of Damascus left 14 people dead and many others wounded.

The Wednesday morning bombing was carried out with two incendiary devices attached to the outside of a bus transporting Syrian troops, the Associated Press reported. A third incendiary device that had been attached to the exterior of the bus fell off the vehicle and was taken apart by Syrian troops, according to the outlet.

“It is a cowardly act,” said Major Gen. Hussein Jumaa, the Damascus police commander, confirming that 14 had died from the explosion, with another succumbing to their injuries.

Jumaa reportedly told the outlet that the devices had exploded around 7:00 a.m., and about an hour later, the bus and scene had been cleared.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of right now, according to the outlet.

Ten people, including a woman and four children, were reportedly left dead from a separate explosion in the rebel-controlled town of Ariha, located in the northwestern part of Syria, according to the outlet.

A similar attack in the capital city occurred in 2017 when terrorists committed a double suicide bombing.

Syrian President Bashar Assad was reelected to another seven-year term in May, even after continuing to face widespread opposition from rebel insurgents in the country.
