Divider in chief: Half won’t even ‘share their views’ of Trump over dinner

In addition to being politically divided over President Trump, the country is now split on whether they even want to talk about him.

In a new survey released on the eve of the House impeachment debate and vote, 51% said that they wouldn’t share their views of the president in mixed company. Some 48% said they would.

The Pew Research Center survey, based off of a previous survey released in June, found that the divide was greater among those who approve and disapprove of the president.

For those who approve of Trump, 57% said that they’d talk up the president at a dinner party that include those who don’t like Trump.

“Many approvers who would share say it is important to let others know their point of view. Others say they feel compelled to speak about their support of Trump,” said the interactive survey analysis.

For disapprovers, an equal 57% would not share their views of Trump at a dinner with strangers.

Pew said that for many, the likelihood of a conflict over dinner isn’t worth bringing Trump up. What’s more, the results show that many feel politics is difficult and complicated.

“There are many reasons why Americans may or may not want to talk about Donald Trump with a group of strangers. For many, politics and Trump are difficult topics to engage in. And in settings with people they don’t know well, the decision to speak up or not can be complicated. Whether they choose to involve themselves in the conversation or avoid doing so, both approvers and disapprovers of Donald Trump illustrate how political discussions in this era can be hard to navigate,” said Pew.
