Trump: Relations with Russia at all-time low, worse than Cold War

President Trump said Wednesday that U.S.-Russia relations are at an all-time low, and are even worse than they were during the Cold War.

“Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War. There is no reason for this. Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together. Stop the arms race?”

Trump’s assessment matches that of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who said last week that things have never been worse between the two nations.

“The situation is worse compared to the classical Cold War since some sort of rules were in force at that time and some decency was in place,” Lavrov said.

The U.S. and Russia have expelled dozens of each others’ diplomats, and the U.S. has been ratcheting up sanctions against Russian officials and businesses for their provocative actions around the world, including interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

Tensions are also building in Syria, where the U.S. is expected to retaliate for Syria’s use of a chemical weapon against it’s own people. Russia has warned the U.S. against retaliation, but Trump warned Wednesday morning that Russia needs to be ready to respond to a U.S. missile strike.
