President Trump said Thursday that the next round of trade negotiations with China was still on despite Chile canceling the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation event at which the two sides had planned to meet. The president said that the White House and Beijing were close to settling on a new meeting place.

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera announced Wednesday that his country would not host next month’s APEC summit in Santiago due to protests inside the country. The announcement complicated the White House’s effort to strike a trade deal with Beijing since Trump and Xi were set to meet at the event to complete a “phase one” on a trade agreement announced earlier this month.
