Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., referenced musician Cardi B on Wednesday as he called for Social Security to be fortified so “seniors are able to retire with the dignity they deserve.”
“Cardi B is right. If we are really going to make America great we need to strengthen Social Security so that seniors are able to retire with the dignity they deserve,” Sanders wrote.

Sanders message was in response to a quote shared by the Social Security Works Twitter page, where musician Cardi B said Franklin D. Roosevelt, who signed the Social Security Act into law, was the real “Make America Great Again” president because of the program.

Social Security Works is an organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the social insurance program.
Sanders is a steadfast supporter of Social Security and introduced legislation last year in attempt to strengthen and expand the program for future generations.
The independent senator has also criticized Trump for choosing former Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C., to be his budget chief, saying it goes against the president’s campaign promise not to cut the program.
“Now, if President Trump or candidate Trump had run his campaign by saying, ‘I’m going to cut your Social Security benefits if elected president,’ well, you know what? Congressman Mulvaney would have been the exact person that he should bring forth as [Office of Budget and Management] director,” Sanders said from the Senate floor last year.
