Detroit lawmaker who used Trump-touted drug to beat coronavirus calls for end to partisan attacks

The Democratic lawmaker from Detroit, who credited President Trump for touting an anti-malarial drug she says saved her life from the coronavirus, has called for an end to partisan attacks on the president.

Michigan state Rep. Karen Whitsett joined Fox & Friends Wednesday morning following her trip to the White House to personally thank Trump for touting hydroxychloroquine.

“You know, we have a president that’s in the White House — not a Republican president. We have a president that is in the White House,” she said on the show. “And, at this time right now, everyone needs to get behind the president of the United States and the vice president of the United States, and we need to simply unite together.”

She continued, “We have people that are in our United States, which is united, that we need to be working to save, and that takes all of us. So, whatever your party is, that’s neither here nor there at this time. Right now, we are human beings in the United States of America, and we need to unite.”

Whitsett visited with Trump on Tuesday and claimed she told him, “I just can’t say how wonderful it is to see your face, and thank you for everything that you have done.”

“I did not know that saying thank you had a political line. I didn’t know that. I thought just saying thank you meant thank you,” she added.

Last week, Whitsett revealed that she used hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug that Trump has promoted as a potential coronavirus treatment, to treat her COVID-19 virus symptoms. She credited the president with saving her life for bringing attention to the drug and increasing its accessibility for coronavirus patients.
