NYSE appoints first female president in 226-year history

The New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday announced the appointment of its first female president, current Chief Operating Officer Stacey Cunningham, who will start her new role on Friday.

Cunningham will be the 67th president and the first woman to serve in this role at the NYSE in the organizatin’s 226-year history, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Cunningham will be succeeding Thomas Farley, who is leaving to become become head of a new special-purpose acquisition company that will raise money to buy financial-technology companies.

With Cunningham’s promotion, two of the world’s biggest stock-exchange operators will be run by women, both the NYSE and Nasdaq Inc. Adena Friedman was appointed as the chief executive of Nasdaq in January, 2017.
