Mika Brzezinski: White House Correspondents’ dinner ‘a win for Trump’

MSNBC “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski said the national media delivered “a win” to President Trump following the controversial performance by comedian Michelle Wolf at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner held Saturday.

On her show Monday, Brzezinski said Wolf’s jokes about White House press secretary Sarah Sanders were offensive and that the association was wrong to have tried to distance itself from them in the aftermath.

“I think at this point, you have to really look at the whole thing and think whether or not it was a good choice, but this was a win for Trump,” Brzezinski said. “So, if you didn’t want this to be a win for Trump, you gave him one in a big way.”

Wolf and the association were criticized by conservatives and some journalists for the comedian’s jokes about Sanders, who Wolf characterized as a liar and made a suggestive joke about softball that some saw as anti-gay.

Margaret Talev, the WHCA president, said in a statement after the dinner that Wolf’s performance was not in the “spirit” of the event, which is supposed to honor the First Amendment.

“And I think it’s really having it both ways to have this woman at the dinner and then apologize for it,” Brzezinski said. “You own it, White House Correspondents’ Association. You invited her.”
