The spiritual leader of the Tibetan people said that he is critical about the way President Trump is governing.
The Dalai Lama, 83, complained to the BBC that unlike Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, Trump had not met with him or spoken to him over the phone. He said in 2016 he had “no worries” about Trump, but now believes he has a “lack of moral principle.”
“When he became president he expressed America first. That is wrong,” the Dalai Lama said.
He said that his indictment of Trump doesn’t apply to other politicians, like Vice President Mike Pence, who he said has supported Tibet. The Dalai Lama took particular aim at Trump’s decision to leave the Paris Accord and the situation at the southern border.
“When I saw pictures of some of those young children, I was sad,” he said. “America … should take a global responsibility.”
The Dalai Lama has been the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people for decades. He lives in a monastery in northern India and has been in exile since China sent troops to the Tibet region in 1959. The Dalai Lama has met with dozens of world leaders and notable figures throughout the years.
