Democrats want to ‘capture’ Congress and impeach Trump, says Kevin McCarthy

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., predicted Monday that Democrats would move quickly to impeach President Trump if they win back the House in the November mid-term elections.

“All they want to do is capture this government and try to impeach this president, or stop anything from happening, or raising your taxes,” he said on Fox News. “I think the American public is too smart for that.”

Republicans and Democrats for the last several months have been fighting over impeachment, or more precisely, who is bringing up the prospect of impeachment. While Republicans have said impeachment is a top priority for Democrats, most Democrats have said only Republicans are raising that option in a bid to motivate Republican voters, and Democratic leaders have said it’s still too early to speculate about Trump’s impeachment.

But McCarthy said Democrats only seem to be running on the idea of stopping Trump, and blocking GOP progress even on issues that have some bipartisan support.

“What are they running on?” McCarthy asked. “That they shut the government down? That they fight us in every step of the way to stop our opioid legislation moving through, to help those who are addicted?”

He also said Democrats are resisting the idea of a rescissions bill that would help cut wasteful or unneeded spending, even though they supported similar bills several times under Presidents Bush and Clinton.
