A New York paramedic was shot while attempting to treat an allegedly drunk and disorderly patient.
First responders arrived after someone called about a reportedly intoxicated patient outside of a bar in the borough of Staten Island on Wednesday. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Thomas McCauley, initially complied with the EMTs.

However, things took a violent turn when McCauley allegedly fired a handgun and shot a paramedic in the shoulder, according to NYPD Inspector Mark Molinari.
The sudden gunshot forced the ambulance to pull over, allowing McCauley to flee out the back door, Molinari said. McCauley was quickly apprehended by a retired NYPD detective and an off-duty sanitation lieutenant.
The injured EMT was transported by his partner to Richmond University Medical Center and is in stable condition, according to ABC 7 NY.
