Chinese influencer banned from BBQ buffet for eating too much

A Chinese food influencer known as “Mr. Kang” told Chinese television outlet Hunan TV that he had been blacklisted from a grill buffet for overeating.

According to Kang, the restaurant was being “discriminatory” against people who could eat a lot.

“I can eat a lot. Is that a fault?” Kang said.

The live-streamer claims that he ate more than three pounds of pork trotters in one visit and eight pounds of prawns in another, the BBC reported.

The restaurant owner had a different story to tell.

“Every time [Mr. Kang] comes here, I lose a few hundred yuan,” the owner told Hunan. “Even when he drinks soy milk, he can drink 20 or 30 bottles. When he eats the pork trotters, he consumes the whole tray of them. And for prawns, usually, people use tongs to pick them up; he uses a tray to take them all.”

The owner has since banned all influencers and live-streamers from his restaurant.

Kang’s story went viral on Chinese social media, with an estimated 250 million views on Weibo.

While the practice may appear harmless, the Chinese government has been cracking down on food influencers. Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a statement in October 2020, calling for Chinese residents to “declare war on food waste.” Since then, the Chinese Communist Party has expressed concerns about food shortages and has encouraged residents to save up food for the winter.

This has also included a crackdown on binge eating.
