Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden tried to placate nervous Democrats as the White House race remains tight hours after polls closed.
“We feel good about where we are, we really do. I’m here to tell you tonight, we believe we’re on track to win this election,” Biden told supporters in Wilmington, Delaware, during a drive-in rally held in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
“We knew because of the unprecedented early vote, the mail-in vote, that it was going to take a while,” the two-term vice president and 36-year Delaware senator added. “It ain’t over until every vote is counted; every ballot is counted.”
Biden’s remarks preempted anticipated attempts by President Trump to declare victory based on early returns.
In their race to 270 electoral votes, Biden has 223 in his ledger, while Trump has 145.
After conceding Tuesday it was less confident about Florida, the Biden campaign remained bullish on states such as Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. Trump held on to Florida, while Biden was projected to pick up Arizona. Georgia and North Carolina are still too close to be called.
