Chris Christie and Ramaswamy spar over UFOs

Republican presidential candidates Chris Christie and Vivek Ramaswamy got into a minor spat over UFOs and the Republican National Committee-sponsored primary debates Tuesday morning.

During an appearance with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Christie suggested that the third primary debate next month focus on current events, such as the battle between Israel and Hamas.

“If it doesn’t lead with the crises in the world, Hugh, then it’s tone-deaf,” the former New Jersey governor said. “We can’t have another start off with a video of ‘Rich Men North of Richmond.’ We can’t have questions about UFOs. We can’t have hand-raising questions. These times are too serious to be minimizing the people who are running for president of the United States by doing that kind of stuff.”

During the first GOP debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in August, Christie was the only candidate to be questioned about UFOs, which he took issue with. “I get the UFO question?” he quipped to moderator Martha MacCallum.

Christie doesn’t want a repeat of that question when candidates gather in Miami on Nov. 8 for the third debate. Christie’s campaign said he met the 4% polling and 70,000 unique donor requirements to participate next month. The RNC has yet to release the list of all qualifying candidates, which it will likely do in the days before Nov. 8.

As the interview with Hewitt continued, Christie named some of his 2024 rivals directly for their alleged isolationist foreign policy stances. “So we’d better lead with the crises in the world because America’s role in the world is open to question,” Christie continued. “You have people like Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy who want to fill the moat and pull up the drawbridge and not be involved in the world in any significant way.”

Ramaswamy quickly responded to Christie’s comments on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, focusing on unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs, the government name for what used to be known as UFOs.

“Chris Christie made a joke of UAPs during the first debate,” Ramaswamy posted. “Reality: this issue has been raised by credible and decorated members of our military & is currently being investigated by Congress.”

Ramaswamy then pivoted to calling for the government’s clarity on a host of topics, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“We deserve a government that stops lying to its people and just comes clean about what we know & what we don’t — about WMDs in Iraq, about the ‘08 bailouts, about the Trump-Russia collusion hoax, about the origin of COVID-19, about Hunter Biden’s bribes, about how our $$ is being blown in Ukraine,” he continued. “We CAN handle the TRUTH. And we deserve a government that gives it to us.”

Christie is among several in the 2024 field who have criticized Ramaswamy, a political novice, over his stances on Israel, Taiwan, and the war in Ukraine.

As the battle between Israel and Hamas continues, Ramaswamy has been adamant that the U.S. refrain from funding another long-term war.
